Your windshield is not one sheet of glass. It is two sheets with a clear plastic layer laminated between them, which is why a windshield holds together instead of falling into your lap. A rock strike breaks only the outer sheet and drives air into the empty space it leaves behind. That trapped air is the white star you are looking at. A repair is not glue and it is not filler. It is optical resin drawn into the break under vacuum and then hardened until the glass carries load as one piece again.
Loose glass and road grit get cleared from the impact point, and any moisture in the break gets drawn off first. Resin will not bond to a wet chip, and a technician who rushes this step leaves you with a cloudy repair you have to look at every day.
An injector seals over the chip and vacuums the trapped air out of every leg of the break. This is the step that decides how the finished repair looks. Air left behind stays visible forever, so the vacuum cycle is not something worth hurrying.
With the vacuum released, resin is pushed into the space the air just vacated. On a star break the resin has to travel down each individual leg, which is why a break with five legs takes noticeably longer than a clean bullseye.
The resin stays liquid until ultraviolet light hits it. A UV lamp held over the repair hardens it in place and bonds the broken glass back to itself. On a clear Buckeye afternoon the sun has already started that process before the lamp comes out.
Cured resin sits slightly proud of the surface, so it gets scraped level and polished until a wiper blade passes over it without catching or chattering. Then you sit in the driver's seat and look at it, because that is the only angle that actually matters.
Know What You Are Looking At
Technicians name breaks by their shape, and the shape is a fair predictor of how well a repair turns out. Here is what is most likely sitting in your windshield right now.
A dark circle with a clean cone of separated glass beneath it, usually from a rounded stone hitting straight on. This is the friendliest break there is. The damage is contained, the resin fills a single cavity, and a bullseye smaller than a quarter typically finishes close to clear.
A center point with cracks radiating out like spokes on a wheel. Star breaks repair well, but they are also the ones that run on you, because every leg is a stress point waiting for a temperature swing or a hard pothole to extend it. These are worth calling about the same week you notice them.
A bullseye with legs coming off it, which is what most freeway rock strikes actually produce. It repairs, though the result depends on how long it sat and how far those legs already traveled. Combination breaks are the most common damage we see across the West Valley.
A partial bullseye, a crescent instead of a full circle, left by a stone that struck at an angle. It behaves much like a bullseye and fills cleanly, although the outer edge of the crescent sometimes stays faintly visible once the resin cures.
The rule we work to: damage under about three inches and outside the driver's line of sight repairs. Longer than that, or sitting right where your eyes rest on the road, and a full windshield replacement is the honest answer.
Why the Clock Runs Faster Here
Glass expands when it heats and contracts when it cools. A chip is a weak point in a panel that is doing both, all day long, harder than it would almost anywhere else in the country.
Park in an uncovered lot in Goodyear in July and the windshield surface climbs well past the air temperature. Then you get in, start the car, and aim the air conditioning straight at the inside of that same panel. The inner sheet cools fast while the outer sheet is still baking, and the difference in expansion between the two layers pulls on every leg of the break. That single habit is the most reliable way we know to turn a repairable chip into a windshield you have to buy.

Here is the part a lot of shops skip, and it is worth saying out loud before you book anything. A repair is a structural fix first and a cosmetic one second.
The strength comes back. Once the resin cures, the break is bonded, it stops spreading, and the panel carries load the way the engineers intended. That matters more than it sounds, because the windshield helps support the roof in a rollover and gives the passenger airbag something solid to push against. Restoring that is the entire point of repairing early.
What does not happen is total disappearance. Look closely at a finished repair and you will usually still find a faint blemish where the impact landed, sometimes a small pit you can feel with a fingernail, sometimes a slight shadow tracing the legs of an old star break. A clean bullseye can finish close to invisible. A dirty star break that sat through four months of summer will not, and anybody promising otherwise is describing a result they cannot actually control.
We would rather you hear that at the curb than be surprised at handover.
